Chapter 3
Lips
Step 1:
Use a regular sewing needle and regular sewing thread. I used white thread so it would show up a little better in the pictures, but ordinarily, I would use a thread color that matches the color of the fabric.

Thread the needle with 30" to 40" of thread. Double the thread and knot the ends together.
Insert the needle into the felt at the neck and exit at the outside of one corner of the mouth. Following the outline of the lips, make a small stitch on the outside lip line and exit the needle on the inside of the mouth at the edge of the pink color.
As you make the stitches, pull them tight.
Make a small stitch on the inside lip line and exit on the outside of the mouth on the lip line. Continue making small stitches on the outside and the inside, all the way around the mouth. Make the stitches small and close to each other.
The mouth seam will be between the outside and inside stitches. That's why you color the lips beyond the seam line on the inside of the mouth.
By keeping the seam between the stitches, fullness is added to the lips. You are catching the seam allowance, along with a little fiberfil, between the stitches and this creates the fullness.

Step 2:
When stitching the upper lip and the lower lip, you definitely want some fullness. To get this fullness, dig the needle down a little ways into the fiberfil and lift it with the needle while you are making the stitch. Be sure to exit the needle at the edge of the pink color so the seam allowance is also enclosed in the stitches.
You will need both the seam allowance and that added bit of stuffing to get that fullness you need. |

Step 3:
Now isn't that a cute little mouth?
When you have stitches all the way around the mouth, make a small stitch on the outside edge and exit the needle at the neck in the felt. Tie off the thread on the edge of the neck.
Make the other open mouth (the one on the other side of the head) the same way you did this one. |
