…Chapter 5 Part 4 …
Putting it all together.
~ Part 1 ~ Part 2 ~ Part 3 ~ Part 4 ~

Fingernails and Toenails

Something else you need to do is the fingernails and toenails. No toenails on the leopard legs though!

I sometimes do them before I joint, sometimes after. Since I forgot to put it in the legs and arms chapter, let's do it now. If you make more than one doll, you may choose to do them before jointing.

1. For both, paint gesso on the ends where fingernails and toenails go.

2. For the thumb only, paint the thumbnail across the seam, not on the flat. This makes the thumb look more "opposing", without having to add a thumb as an extra piece. Let dry.

3. Paint a coat of colored paint on the fingernails and on the toenails.

4. To give the nails shine, paint a coat of Mod Podge or other clear coating on the nails.
It is fun to sprinkle a little extra fine glitter on them too if desired.

For SUPER DUPER fingernails, use Barb Keeling’s 3-D Crystal Lacquer. You can get it from Keeling’s Krafts. It is a Sakura product, so it is probably available in some craft stores too. http://www.keelingskrafts.com

With the Crystal lacquer you can actually make the fingernails long!

When you get it, there is a lesson on making long fingernails.

5. Basically what you do is put it on, right from the bottle. Make it in a kind of Bubble. Let it dry for about 15 to 20 min. and then press on it with your fingers. As you press, you pull it forward and flatten it.

When you press on it, if it feels like it is sticking to your fingers, wait a bit more, and try again.

how it starts to extend over the edge.
6. Add another bubble and press it just the same, shaping it into a nice, long fingernail.

You can add more coats to make the nails as long as you want, within reason of course!

7. Paint the fingernail with "real" fingernail polish!

You can also do it over just the Gesso, and have plain white underneath. Or over a skin toned paint to get a look of plain un-painted fingernails. Paint with fingernail polish, clear, light, or bright to protect.

NOTE***If you get some Crystal Lacquer, it is also GREAT for eyeballs. It gives them a rounded "look" like a real eyeball. It also gives them wonderful depth.

Mod Podge works just as well for fingernails, eyeballs and lips as far as shine is concerned, but you can't really draw it out to make long nails, and it won't make the eyeballs look as deep.

We will do the eyelashes, eyeball coating, and lip coating after the hair is on in the next chapter.

Get your doll all ready, and I’ll see you in a few days.

***A quick look at a "bust" in progress***

I did her with a vampish face. She is leaning towards the flapper era.

Are any of you doing a "bust" too?

Adaptation...
To sew the crotch in tight, before jointing, simply start sewing back and
forth from side to side, pulling the crotch in as you do. Take the stitches
around in a circle about as big as a nickel so the area is pulled in flat in
a wider area. If you just sew back and forth in the same place, it will only
pull in a little area, which won't help a whole lot, and it will also tear
through after many stitches.
